Why We Don't Accept Insurance

We believe that client's should be in charge of their care, not big insurance companies. While insurance can be helpful, it's not always designed with the client's wellbeing in mind. â€‹

Insurance promotes a quantity over quality mindset. Insurance reimburses therapists at a negotiated rate for the area that is lower than their private pay rate. This means therapists have to see more clients to make ends meet, often leading to compassion fatigue and burnout. This goes against our values and passion for this field.

One of our greatest concerns for therapy is privacy and confidentiality. Clients share some of the most intimate details of their life with us and we want them to feel safe while doing so. Unfortunately, with insurance, there are limits to confidentiality as they can access and review all documentation.  They can also deny coverage or request proof of medical necessity  for ongoing therapy

Working with insurance removes the therapist and client from being in the driver seat of the car as insurance has a hand in determining treatment, such as  what modalities are covered, the frequency of sessions, and how long sessions can be. For example, there can sometimes be push back on Brainspotting or EMDR sessions, especially if they are scheduled for more than 50 minutes.

There can breaches in privacy, which we just saw with UnitedHealth, that can have legal implications.  This left providers not getting paid and potentially client’s data being left unsecured.

To be able to use insurance, a diagnosis must be provided to the client; however, not all clients meet medical necessity for a diagnosis. This makes it difficult to seek therapy for general wellness concerns.

Utilizing insurance and having a diagnosis on record can sometimes impact things like life insurance.

Overall, At Transformational Healing Houston, we aim to provide quality focused therapy, that is designed based upon individuals needs and preferences. We are passionate about being up-to-date in the latest research and therapeutic modalities so that we can offer you meaningful therapy . We strive to practice what we preach and implement excellent self-care so that we can continue to show up for you  and assist in navigating life’s ups and downs.
